What is counseling?

Counseling is professional guidance from a trained and licensed individual.  Many people may offer to provide guidance and advice when you’re facing a challenge, but it’s important to distinguish between a friend’s advice and that of a counselor. To this end, counselors are equipped to help you understand and work through any issues you may face.

What can one expect from a counselor?

In meeting with a counselor, one can expect to be taken seriously and be engaged in open discussion on whatever topic you want to discuss. In most cases, you can expect a counselor to maintain confidentiality about you and what you choose to discuss. It is important to keep in mind that a counselor is not going to be able to directly solve issues for you. Rather, they will be dedicated to helping you understand and work through any problems you may be facing.

Not every counselor is the same and their approaches may vary widely as well. As a result, it may take more than one try to find a counselor that works well for you.

Who can you go to for counseling?

There are different types of certifications one may undergo to become certified in counseling. When choosing any counselor, make sure to verify any fees and check that they are in-network with your insurance before your appointment.

Here are some of the main categories:

  • Psychiatrist
Holds M.D. and specializes in the treatment of mental disorders. As a medical professional, they can prescribe medication as a means of alleviating symptoms. Some psychiatrists both prescribe medication and provide counseling services while others work with other professionals to deliver counseling services along with medication.

  • Counselor/Therapist
Holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling Education, with a minimum of two years of individual counseling, with a passing score on a State or National License Exam.

  • Psychologist
Holds Ph.D. from a psychology department. They have passed a national licensing exam and two years of supervised practice. Some perform counseling, while others remain in academia.

  • Social Worker
Holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work, plus one year of supervised practice before sitting for their exam.
